Cabling, have you forgotten about it? If you have, you’re not alone. You can’t see it, you can’t touch it, it just works. Or, if you are reading this, it might not. It’s difficult to imagine something so complex, sophisticated and vital to your communication infrastructure being concealed and maybe even forgotten.


There are important factors that you must consider before investing in Structured Cabling.
    • Expected lifetime of your cabling plant
    • The applications that will run on your Cabling System (what kind of bandwidth requirements does your business need)
    • Cost of active electronics (fiber components are approx. 10x the cost of copper)
    • Warranty length and covered components
    • Price as it relates to performance
    • Time you will occupy the facility. (do you own or lease? Or are you building?)
    • Total Cost of Ownership


If you are building a new facility, plan before construction starts! There are considerations, such as conduit diameter and placement, and equipment room location that need to be carefully designed. Remember, the most expensive aspect of cabling is labor. Moving conduit or testing and replacing cable can be a monumental (expensive) task.


Cost is the deciding factor most of the time. However the lowest initial cost might not be the lowest total cost of ownership. Only with careful planning can you be sure that you make a wise decision. This not only affects the type of cable that you choose but the company that you choose to design and install it. Require the company to have Registered Communications Distribution Designers (RCDD) and certified cabling technicians on staff. There are certain installation criteria that have to be maintained in order to preserve the integrity of the cable and your warranty. A poor design and installation will render the most sophisticated cable useless.

    • Did you know when pulling copper cabling through a conduit, the cable can’t be pulled with more than 25 lbs. of force or it could compromise the cable.
    • Did you know if your cable is not routed correctly, you could experience Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): The interference in signal transmission or reception caused by the radiation of electrical and magnetic fields which can cause complete system failure. The fact is, be careful who you choose.
